Acne
Acne is an inflammation of the hair follicles and oil glands in certain areas of the body (face, back, chest) that occurs most frequently in adolescence. It is manifest as blackheads, papules, pus bumps, painful nodules and cysts. Discolored patches and pitted or depressed scars may follow all types of acne, but especially the more severe cases. Stress can worsen acne, as can occlusion or pressure on the skin (i.e. hats, leaning face on hand). Certain medications have also been shown to cause acne to flare. Hormonal influences are of great importance in acne breakouts, particularly for those patients who are past the teenage years. Flare ups commonly occur in association with menstrual cycles. Acne is not caused by chocolate or fatty foods or, in fact, any kind of foods.
UV Therapy
Ultraviolet (UV) light therapy has been used for many years to treat such varied conditions as psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and pruritus (itching). We have a broad range of therapeutic options regarding the use of ultraviolet light in the treatment of skin conditions. This type of light therapy is normally given in our office by using a light panel or light box.
Allergy Testing
Allergy testing involves taping chemicals onto the back for 48 to 72 hours. At that time the patches are removed and a reading is performed. Sometimes a second reading may be required in 24-48 hours. This type of allergy testing is used for allergies which are the result of a chemical directly contacting the skin (e.g. preservatives in cosmetics, rubber based products, etc.).
